Drone Photography Tips: 9 Things I Do on Every Shoot
After 500 commercial shoots, these are the settings, angles, and mistakes that separate usable footage from forgettable clips.
I've lost count of how many times a client has looked at my footage and said, "Wow, that looks so easy." It's not. It's the opposite of easy. It's a grind of pre-flight checks, battery math, and fighting the sun. I'm Kofi, I've been flying commercially in Phoenix for nine years, and I've logged over 500 paid shoots. Real estate, weddings, solar farms, you name it. I've also crashed enough drones to fill a small museum. So when I say these are the nine things I do on every single shoot, I mean it. These aren't tips from a YouTube video. These are the habits that survive contact with a 110-degree afternoon and a client who's watching their watch.
First, I kill the marketing hype about flight time before I even leave the house. DJI says the Avata 2 gets 23 minutes. In my notebook, in the Phoenix summer, I get 8 minutes and 22 seconds in PosHold before the low-battery warning screams at me. That's a 63% drop from the claim. I've seen a $15,000 enterprise rig struggle to hit half its endurance when it's 110 out. So my first rule is simple: I plan every shot around a 6-minute flight, not the advertised time. I land with 30% battery left, always. That 30% is my safety margin for wind, for a missed approach, for a client who suddenly wants "one more shot of the pool." If you drain a battery to zero, you're not a pilot, you're a gambler. And the house always wins.
Second, I fly the route before I fly the route. I know that sounds like a Zen koan, but it's practical. When I arrive at a property, I do a slow, high-altitude pass with the camera pointed straight down. This is my recon. It costs me about 3 minutes of flight time and it saves me from disaster. I'm looking for obstacles that don't show up on a map: power lines that sag lower than they should, a neighbor's tree that's grown into the flight path, a trampoline that's going to be a magnet for my prop wash. On one wedding shoot, this recon pass spotted a guy setting up a massive inflatable arch in the backyard that wasn't there during the site walkthrough. That 3 minutes saved me from a $2,000 collision. I do this on every job, no exceptions.
Third, I set my gimbal to a slight downward tilt, about 15 degrees. This is my "no wasted sky" rule. The biggest mistake I see from new pilots is the horizon dead center in the frame. That means half your frame is empty sky that's going to blow out in the sun and give you nothing. By tilting down 15 degrees, you're capturing more of the subject and less of the atmosphere. For real estate, this is the difference between a house and a house in a landscape. For a wedding, it's the difference between a couple and a couple with a context. It's a tiny adjustment that changes the entire feel of the footage.
Fourth, I fly in manual mode, not the auto settings. This is my contrarian take. Everyone wants to use the intelligent flight modes, the ActiveTrack, the waypoints. They're fine for a hobbyist, but for paid work, they're a liability. The drone's automation doesn't know that the client's dog is about to run through the frame, or that the sun is about to dip behind a cloud and change your exposure by two stops. I fly in manual for the control, and I use the auto features only as a safety net. On a recent solar farm inspection, the automated orbit mode decided to take a shortcut through a guy wire. I had to switch to manual and yank it away in a split second. The automation was about to cost me a $2,500 repair. Manual mode is the only way to fly when you're getting paid.
Fifth, I check my props before every single battery swap. Not a visual glance, an actual physical check. I run my fingers along the leading edge of each prop, feeling for nicks or chips. A tiny chip, invisible to the eye, can cause a vibration that ruins your footage with jelly roll. I've seen it happen on a DJI Mavic 3 that looked pristine. The client's wedding footage was unusable because of a microscopic imperfection in the prop. I've also seen a prop fail completely in flight. That's not a jello problem, that's a crash problem. The Protos, my little practice FPV drone, has taken more beatings than anything I own. I've crashed it so many times I've lost count, and the frame finally cracked before the props wore out. That's durability. But even that little tank gets a prop check. It takes 30 seconds and it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
Sixth, I underexpose by a third of a stop. This is a cinematographer's trick that most drone pilots don't use. The logic is simple: it's easier to recover detail from the shadows in post than it is to recover a blown-out highlight. The sky is the biggest highlight you'll ever deal with, and once it's blown out, it's gone forever. By underexposing slightly, I preserve the sky's texture and color, and I lift the shadows in post. The result is a more cinematic image with better dynamic range. It's not a huge difference, but over a minute of footage, it's the difference between a professional look and a home video look.
Seventh, I shoot at 4K even if the client only wants 1080p. This is non-negotiable. There are two reasons. First, it gives me room to crop in post. If I need to stabilize a shot or reframe it slightly, I have the extra resolution to do it without losing quality. Second, it future-proofs the footage. The client might want a 4K version in three years for a new marketing campaign, and if I only gave them 1080p, they're stuck. I've had clients come back to me years later asking for higher resolution footage, and I've been able to deliver. That's a good reputation builder.
Eighth, I always have a backup plan for my backup plan. I carry three batteries minimum, but my real backup is a different drone. If I'm on a wedding shoot and my Avata 2 has an issue, I'm not packing up and going home. I've got my old Mavic Air 2 in the car, charged and ready. It's not as fancy, but it gets the job done. On one shoot, my primary drone had a gimbal failure ten minutes before the ceremony started. I swapped to the backup, and the client never knew there was a problem. The cost of a backup drone is the cost of doing business. If you can't afford a backup, you can't afford to be a professional.
Ninth, and this is the one that separates the pros from the hobbyists, I check the wind at altitude before I commit to a shot. The ground might be calm, but at 100 feet, it could be blowing 20 miles an hour. I do a quick vertical ascent, hover for ten seconds, and watch my drone's drift. If it's fighting to stay still, I adjust my plan. I either lower my altitude or change my angle. This is the difference between crisp, stable footage and footage that looks like it was shot during an earthquake. I've seen too many pilots lose a drone to a gust they didn't expect because they didn't check the conditions at altitude.
Now, the criticism. The DJI Avata 2 is a fantastic drone, but the Fly More combo is a ripoff. The backpack that comes with it doesn't fit the drone properly. I had to remove all the spacers just to close it. You're paying hundreds of dollars for a bag that doesn't work. Skip the combo, buy the basic kit, and spend the savings on extra batteries. I've also got to call out the CADDXFPV Protos for its low-battery behavior. When it hits low voltage, it just cuts all power and falls from the sky. No controlled descent. I've picked it up off the ground more times than I can count. It's a $370 paperweight if you're not careful. I still recommend it for beginners because it takes a beating and the Walksnail video is clear and low-latency, but you need to know its limit and land well before you think you need to.
My notebook is full of these lessons. Every crash, every near-miss, every battery that died early. It's the only way I've learned. I don't trust marketing claims, I trust my own measurements. And my measurements say that flying a drone for money is a constant battle against physics, heat, and your own mistakes.
Here's the bottom line: the gear matters less than the habits. A $500 drone flown with discipline will beat a $2,000 drone flown sloppily. Learn the wind, respect the battery, check your props. Do that, and you'll be ahead of 90% of the pilots out there. Everything else is just practice.
